WE HAVE LOST MAYNARD FERGUSON
The great trumpeter Maynard Ferguson has passed away last August 23. He played
with Joe Zawinul in the early 1960s.
August 31, 2006
June 5, 2006 In 2002, a historic concert took place at the “Leverkusener
Jazztage” to celebrate Joe Zawinul’s 70th birthday. The
musical retrospective of Zawinul’s career featured the WDR Big
Band along with several awesome soloists, including Zawinul’s
former bandmates from Weather Report, Weather Update and The
Zawinul Syndicate. For the Leverkusen concert, Zawinul took
the stage for only one number. In contrast to the 2002 production, the upcoming Autumn
2005 tour of Vienna, Salzburg, Leverkusen, Berlin, Madrid and
Valladolid takes on an entirely new form. Joe Zawinul will
step to the front and lead the WDR Big Band through premier
performances of new compositions as well as new arrangements
of classic compositions like “In a Silent Way,” “Black
Market,” and “A Remark You Made.” Many of the pieces are
adaptations of original Zawinul compositions for Weather
Report and The Zawinul Syndicate, arranged for big band by
Vince Mendoza and Joe Zawinul. In addition to the WDR Big
Band, Zawinul will be accompanied by several of his
small-group colleagues: Linley Mathe (bass), Alex Acuna (percussion),
and Nathaniel Townsley (drums). WDR Big Band Cologne The “Westdeutscher Rundfunk Big Band” (WDR Big Band Cologne)
performs as a multifaceted group of musical ambassadors. They
present commissioned works and produce original music for WDR
radio and television broadcasts, both within Germany and
worldwide. Over the course of 50 years, the band has evolved
to its current status: a world-class jazz big band attracting
internationally-known soloist, conductors, composers, and
arrangers, all of whom contribute to the development of the
band’s unparalleled success and popularity. The band has
received many accolades, including several Grammy Award
nominations and the German Jazz Award. Current dates:
